Kathryn MacNaughton

PASSAGES

11.03.2023 - 05.06.2023

Le sue collaborazioni recenti includono Kit and Ace, Collective Arts Brewery, and The Gardiner Museum, Toronto.

MAGMA gallery is pleased to present "Passages," Kathryn MacNaughton's first solo exhibition in Italy, which will take place from March 11th to May 6th, 2023.
Inspired by both vintage colors and contemporary design, Kathryn MacNaughton (Toronto, 1985) enriches the visual language of acrylic painting with digital elements. Using multi-layered forms and curved lines, she creates eye-catching compositions which resemble digital sculptures transferred on canvas. Her artistic style poetically combines abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction and echoes of figurative painting.
MacNaughton's painting process is unpredictable and well-balanced at the same time. First, the artist meditatively blends colors, creating a kind of vibrant chaos on canvas. Then, she adds black curvy lines, which occasionally seem to disappear and reappear in the painting, becoming a kind of pictorial metronome of the compositional rhythm. This technic allows to achieve vibrant and dynamic balance within this seemingly chaotic approach due to the constant alternation between delicacy and brutality, improvisation, and accuracy.
Graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design (2007), Kathryn Macnaughton chose the graphic design with its geometric forms and digital processing as the main source of inspiration. However, her experiments with textures, vivid and free artistic touches support the raw and handmade feeling, absent in the digital work.  Her creative process, inspired by collage, cutouts and vintage palettes, combines the contemporary «digital» thinking and the traditional analog technic.
In this way MacNaughton establishes a dialogue between the present-day reality and timeless artistic expression. Her works have been exhibited worldwide since 2010, bringing polarities together through qualities of shape, color and line. Her recent collaborations include Kit and Ace, Collective Arts Brewery, and The Gardiner Museum, Toronto.
